The Property Council of Australia urges the Victoria State government to put in place policies that would stimulate recovery after the recent foreclosure.
Danni Hunter, executive director of Victoria at the Property Council, said the state's decision to end its fifth lockdown last week would help jumpstart its recovery and prepare for a post-pandemic future .
"We now need urgent attention from the Victorian government to reopen our city as soon as possible by allowing people to resume safe lives and repositioning Melbourne and Victoria as a place to invest and feel at home, ”he said.
Hunter believes that some focus on Melbourne's CBD is essential for the state's recovery, given that it contributes around 7% of national GDP and nearly a quarter of the state's economic growth.
“With each lockdown we take a step back and we can't afford to sit still and watch the slow demise of CBD without taking action. We need to look beyond the lockdown cycle and create a new vision to draw people to the city to live, work and play, ”he said.
Hunter said policies should include a hybrid work model that would allow people to work from home and office, a stimulus package aimed at preserving CBD businesses, and an aggressive strategy to attract national and global headquarters to settle in Melbourne CBD.
"Urgent action is essential if Melbourne is to maintain its status as a global city in which high quality companies and high quality talent want to live, work and invest," said Hunter.
