Supplies in the country fell 0.5% in May, in line with the decline in the number of dwellings in the private sector.

"The overall decline is attributable to the decline in private sector housing, which declined by 1.3% in terms of trend," said Daniel Rossi, director of construction statistics for the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS ). However, in seasonally adjusted figures, the total number of dwellings increased 0.7% in May, with an increase in Victoria (14.4%) contributing to the national increase.

"May construction approval figures were slightly above expectations," said Maree Kilroy, economist at BIS Oxford Economics.

Queensland (6.3%), Western Australia (4.7%), South Australia (2.9%) and Tasmania (1.2%) recorded drops, while New South Wales has not moved.

The number of private dwellings excluding houses increased by 1.2%, while the number of approved dwellings decreased by 0.3%.

The total value of approved buildings decreased by 0.2%, in terms of trend. The value of residential buildings decreased by 0.6%, while that of non-residential buildings increased by 0.3%.
