Leanne Pilkington: "I encourage women to step up their efforts"

Harassment has been and continues to be a major problem for women around the world. For Leanne Pilkington, it was a blow she suffered at the start of her career.

As we celebrate International Women's Day in March, we talk to the President of REINSW and the CEO of Laing + Simmons about how it went from #MeToo to #girlboss.

"I worked as a mall manager and I had #MeToo experience with my regional manager. I have always bragged about my ability to handle difficult relationships and situations, and the fact that I could not cope with this incident has actually shaken my confidence, ”she admits.

"It took my confidence a few months to recover and for me to really accept that I cannot control the behavior of others – I can only control how I react."

Her decision ended up changing her life for the better, when it finally led her to a career in property. With many of her friends deeply attached to the property, it was something Leanne appreciated not only professionally, but also personally.

"Property means different things to different people, but it is important to all of us, from the basic need for a roof over your head to an incredible way to create wealth." More than just a house, property can be a project, a passion, a hobby, your comfort or an investment. For me, at various times, it has been all of these things, and it still is, "she says.

Today, Leanne has become one of the most important women in the Australian real estate industry.

"I never intended to become so visible in the industry, but the fact that we have so few female leaders in this space means that it has happened produces almost organically, "she confesses.

"It was something that, at first, I was happy to pursue when I was asked to speak at events, in the media or on panels. Now, I'm proactively looking to use my profile to support not only women in the industry, but causes and initiatives that will improve the profile of all agents in the eyes of consumers and in the services we provide. »

As co-founder of the networking group Real Women in Real Estate, she also wants to inspire other women to be confident to take over and become full-fledged leaders.

"I now actively encourage women to get involved and get involved in issues that matter to our industry, such as the Pathway to Professionalism initiative. I want them to step out of their comfort zone and challenge themselves to take their careers to the next level. I want them to speak and take positions on the board, and speak at panels and at conferences. »
