More Victorians looking to move north

A growing number of Victoria residents are seeking to leave the state for good after new COVID-19 restrictions are imposed – and many have Queensland in sight.

Adam Coward, director of revenue at movers booking company Muval, told 9 News his company's website has seen a dramatic increase in visitors over the past three months – and that 65% requests online over the past two weeks had arrived from Melbourne, the capital of Victoria.

As to where most of them go, Coward told 9 News that "Queensland is the biggest", with 21% of movers looking to relocate to Brisbane. Meanwhile, 17% want to move to Perth and 15% want to move to Sydney.

"Most of the calls we get are from people who have lost their jobs or have had their businesses shut down and are looking to relocate," Coward told 7 News.

As part of the Victoria Stage 4 lockdown, moving companies are seen as an essential business and can operate during curfew hours. However, residents who decide to take the plunge and leave the state must also be able to provide an official lease or residency documents, as well as hold a valid border pass.

Additionally, anyone who has visited a coronavirus hotspot must adhere to a two-week hotel quarantine.

Coward told 9 News that the most common form of transportation for residents is by train.

"So you will see people loading the goods that you have in your house, in Melbourne for example, and they are transported here [in Queensland] without being touched by anyone else."
