The Tweed Shire council in northern New South Wales has declared a housing emergency due to a lack of available and affordable housing in the area.
At a recent meeting, the council decided to write to the federal and state governments asking "to explore other possibilities for additional social and affordable housing in the Tweed" .
According to Tweed Mayor Chris Cherry, a growing number of residents were now finding out that they could no longer afford to live in the Shire.
“Council noted the lack of affordable and available housing in the Tweed in 2018,” Cherry said. “COVID has accentuated this and what we are seeing now is a marked acceleration of this trend caused by people leaving cities and buying properties in the Tweed. "
Cherry added that local real estate agents are reporting record sales and "unprecedented" rent increases.
"Given that we are also experiencing historically low rental availability, this means there is stress in the rental market," Cherry said. "This translates on the ground into two-income families who cannot afford to live in the Tweed."
"This is a community and government issue. With the number of street sleepers increasing, the situation is getting worse by the day as the buying boom continues. "Cherry said.
