Tax subsidies to victims of bush fires

The Victoria State government will provide tax relief to businesses, families and individuals whose properties have been damaged or destroyed by bush fires.

According to the announcement of the State, the persons concerned will benefit from an "ex gratia" relief for their assessment of the 2020 property tax. The property tax will also be lifted on eligible properties used to provide free housing to people in need of shelter.

In addition, owners who decide not to rebuild in their local community will be able to get $ 55,000 in stamp duty relief if they choose to buy in another region.

These efforts are of great help to those affected by the bush fires, said Fiona Nield, Victorian executive director of the Housing Industry Association (HIA).

"Taxes such as stamp duties and property taxes are a major obstacle for people buying or building a house, and by drastically reducing these costs, people will hopefully be able to return earlier to a new house and as little anxiety as possible, "she said.

HIA recently contacted Bushfire Recovery Victoria as part of its efforts to work closely with the government to help affected families.

"In these times of great hardship for those affected, it is the little things that alleviate financial suffering that matter most. This decision will help alleviate some unnecessary worries," said Mr. Nield.
