Upgrading your house: Save money without giving up the date night

Australian homeowners are unwilling to make sacrifices when they save for an improved property, and the night is one of them. ING's Home Ownership Survey found that only 25 percent of respondents would drop out of social activities – for example, on the night of the meeting – to speed up their savings.

Saving for a renovated home means you already have a roof, so you'll save less pressure to reduce your budget. But Australians are saving money in another way that might surprise you.

One in five home buyers moved from one state to another in places like Brisbane or the Central Coast, where real estate prices are more affordable. More than half of the survey respondents indicated that they were planning an interstate move in the following year.

This is not the only way for homebuyers to save for home renovations. More than a third of those who have improved over the last year have asked a roommate to help pay their rent. Of these, 32% were families.

If you want to upgrade but do not want to move from one state to another, take a tenant or get rid of the date, what are your options?

Balance is the key to saving, whether it's your first home, your second home or your tenth home. Although you may need to get rid of some small luxury items, you do not have to give up everything you love.

Of course, it's nice to go to the house you dream of, but not at the expense of everything you love. Here are some tips to get the most out of your savings without putting a lock on your wallet.

Identify your priorities
Start by identifying your priorities, both in terms of upgrade goals and your daily lifestyle. First, ask yourself what you hope to gain by buying a new property.

The ING survey revealed that 40% of renovators wanted a more beautiful home. Other reasons include the desire to move to another area, to have more outdoor space or simply to get a bigger home for their growing family.

If your house is too small, the timing of the upgrade may be more important than the house itself. If you are looking for a particular property but are not in a hurry to move, your priorities will be different.

The next step is to determine your lifestyle priorities. Think about how you spend your disposable income: coffee, dinners and movie nights? Or is it a beach vacation, organic products and clothing? Whatever it is, decide where you can and can not move.

Search Jobs
Put your investigative skills to the test and start looking for savings. If you do not want to give up the evening date but you have to save money, you have several options. Use websites such as Groupon and Scoopon to find discounted deals on restaurants, activities and more.

You can also install an attachment in your browser, such as Honey, which will automatically search coupon codes for purchases you make online, which will allow you to save even more on your purchases.

Airbnb your space
You have room, but you do not want to take a long-term tenant? Remember to use Airbnb to temporarily rent a room in your house. While this means that paying guests stay at home, it gives you more control over when you will have tenants. This can work well if you have an independent apartment or a room with its own private entrance.

Accommodation in turn
Sometimes the best part of social activities is not going to a restaurant or bar, it's just somewhere. In turn with your friends, organize social events like game nights or dinners. It does not have to be expensive, but you will still be out of the house and have a good time.

Switch to the digital library
If new magazines are your weakness, the costs can add up quickly. Turn to your local library, where you can often download digital copies of the latest magazines and books on your own device. Bonus points for the respect of the environment!

Use a Dungeon Cup
If a good cup of coffee is important to you, we will not tell you. But you may be able to reduce the cost of your daily java by using a cup. Many café coffees reduce the cost of your coffee when you bring your own cup, so invest in a reusable option and save over time.

Establish a Budget
Set a weekly or monthly budget for small pleasures such as restaurant meals or purchases – the amount depends on you and your household – but do not go over it. That way, you can always do what you love, but without worrying that your expenses will snowball.

Consolidate your subscription services
With entertainment options like Netflix, Hulu and Foxtel on the table, it seems that spending a little money for a monthly subscription can save money.

But if you sign up too much, you will end up spending a lot more than you would get in movie tickets. Take stock of your monthly subscriptions: could you choose only one and get rid of the rest?

Finally, to balance your budget, you must be attentive and not limit all the activities that make you feel good! There is a reason why Australians are reluctant to eliminate the night of the date and this because it offers real value.
