Victoria deploys additional assistance for tenants in difficulty

The Victorian government initiated additional support for tenants who are struggling to pay their rent.

Victoria & # 39; s COVID-19 Rent Relief Grant Program will provide grants of up to $ 1,500 to tenants, which will be used directly to contribute to the cost of their rent.

This one-time payment is intended for tenants who spend more than 30% of their income on rent.

The grant is intended for tenants who have lost income of 20% or more due to the pandemic.

Other qualifications for the grant:

Annual income is capped at $ 62,860 for singles and $ 94,300 for couples.

Applicants should not have more than $ 2,000 in savings.
The landlord and tenant will also have to enter into a rent reduction agreement for a period after May 27, 2021.
Casual workers on vacation and work visas, international students, skilled visa holders, seasonal workers, New Zealand citizens, and all refugee and temporary protection visa holders are eligible for the program.

A previous round of Rent Relief Grants, which ran from April 2020 through March 2021, helped over 33,000 Victorian tenants maintain their tenancies.

Housing Minister Richard Wynne said the grant will ease stress for many tenants currently in financial difficulty.

"We know there are a lot of Victorians out there right now – the last thing they have to worry about is if they can keep a roof over their heads "said Mr. Wynne.
