According to a Propertyology study, housing markets in Australia's capital cities do not benefit from the population explosion, as internal migration favors satellite cities.
Research data revealed that Queensland, Hobart, New South Wales and parts of the Victoria area are popular for Australian residents who move from one city to the other , the Gold Coast being the first choice.
"Last year, with the median home price only 60% of Sydney's, the Gold Coast attracted 7,441 new residents from other parts of Australia," said Simon Pressley, Executive Director. of the Propertyology.
According to Pressley, the number of inter-state migrations in Queensland increased, contributing 28,668 to the state's population growth for the year ending June 2018.
In Victoria, the Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong, Baw Baw, Mitchell, Wodonga and Wangaratta areas attracted people, according to the report. Melbourne recorded a small net gain in migration, but official data indicates that 21 out of 27 Melbourne city councils experienced a net population loss due to internal migration.
In New South Wales, the Cessnock, Maitland, Shellharbour, Dubbo, Tweed, Wingecarribee and Ballina areas have welcomed a significant number of new residents. For its part, Sydney was the least popular in terms of internal migration, according to the data.
