The Australian Capital Territory has reported surprisingly strong adoption of the HomeBuilder program, said Michael Sukkar, Federal Minister of Housing.
Sukkar stated that ACT is only to register 500 requests for the program. However, the actual number reaches 2,000.
"In terms of exceeding its weight, the ACT being four times what the Treasury expected when we put the program in place is a truly phenomenal result," he said. in a Canberra Times report.
ACT Senator Zed Seselja stated that the HomeBuilder program has been positively received by many Canberrans who are in the process of acquiring ownership of existing projects.
For example, the DKSN multi-unit development at Dickson signaled strong buyer demand. About 200 apartments from the second stage of development have been reinforced with the grant.
"Here in ACT, seeing these HomeBuilder projects move forward is huge for the local industry," Seselja said.
In a separate AAP report, Premier Scott Morrison said the HomeBuilder program had exceeded expectations, with almost 82,000 registered requests across the country. These requests, if approved, will result in a pipeline of construction works worth $ 18 billion.
The program was originally supposed to end in December, but it was recently extended until March of this year. However, the grant amount was reduced from $ 25,000 to $ 15,000. The program, however, is unlikely to be extended further with other stimulus programs like JobKeeper and JobSeeker.
"All of these measures were designed as temporary, targeted and proportionate measures to deal with the spread of the crisis," Morrison said.
