The Queensland government unveiled the largest concentrated investment in social housing in the history of the state.
Leeanne Enoch, the State Minister of Housing, said the $ 2.9 billion investment would increase delivery of housing supply across Queensland.
"We are investing $ 1.9 billion over four years to increase the social housing stock and move more vulnerable Queenslanders to housing more quickly," said Leeanne Enoch, Housing Minister for the United Kingdom. ;State. “[And] To support this, we are establishing a new billion dollar housing investment fund, the returns of which will generate new supply to meet current and future housing needs. "
"As part of our action plan, we will accelerate projects and initiatives that will increase the supply of social housing, seek proposals to develop underutilized public land, and carry out developments in mixed use, ”Enoch added.
Over the life of the state government housing strategy, approximately 10,000 social and affordable housing units are expected to be added to the housing stock.
Antonia Mercorella, Managing Director of the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ), said the announcement is a big step towards the goal of expanding the supply of affordable housing in State.
Additionally, she said it would increase state building activity, which in turn would boost the overall economy.
“The government has to do the heavy lifting to provide affordable housing for our most vulnerable. We welcome the significant investment in putting roofs over the heads of people and the jobs that will be created when this much needed housing is built, ”she said.
Mercorella also praised the state's $ 14.7 billion allocation for infrastructure, with over 60% of that fund to be allocated to areas outside of the Greater Brisbane.
“With the increase in Queensland's population, it is great to see such a sum being spent on roads, public facilities, local government projects including sewers and water as well as disaster resilience, ”she said. "We are delighted to see that the regions of Queensland are taking the lion's share of this spending, especially in light of the influx of new residents they are experiencing. "
