South Australia Deploys HomeBuilder Extension

The Government of South Australia announced a further three-month general extension of the HomeBuilder program, giving applicants an additional six months after signing the contract to begin construction of their new home or renovation.

Previously, the scheme required claimants to seek an extension on a case-by-case basis from the SA State Tax Commissioner. Eligible reasons include labor shortages, difficulties in securing construction materials, and delays in funding, land titling, and council approvals.

The extension will help ease the pressure on the industry to meet the growing demand due to the program, SA Treasurer Rob Lucas said.

"This will give builders more time to plan and secure trades people and ensure a steady pipeline of work that, in the end, is good for the job," he said.

Stephen Knight, executive director of SA at the Housing Industry Association, said the extension would provide relief to builders who can now plan for a more orderly deployment of work during the first half of 2021.

Knight said recent lockdowns in South Australia due to the COVID-19 outbreak have disrupted deadlines for many builders, most already working at full capacity before HomeBuilder's application deadline before the 31st of December.

“Since the launch of HomeBuilder, builders have argued that the three-month eligibility requirement between contract signing and starting on site was not sufficient, as this process normally takes at least four to five months, ”he said.

Knight said the HomeBuilder will likely increase interest in new homes across the state, putting pressure on builders who will also see increased demand for their services.

"By introducing the additional three month coverage extension to the program, those who were in the process of planning their new home or renovation can now save the little extra time they need to finalize the details" , he said. "This in turn means that hundreds of traders are able to keep working and continue the vital work of housing South Australians."
